Fifty-five men wrote a letter to their monarch to say that he'd gone too far and that the time had arrived for their colonies to establish their own government. Starting with John Hancock, the men stepped forward and signed their names on the Declaration of Independence a little over 232 years ago.
Standing in that room, I was moved to tears by their courage and I thought about the situation we now find our country in, lead by men who think they are above the law; men who have given themselves the power to ignore the laws set forth in that same room in Philadelphia, when our Constitution was hammered out- paying focused attention to each word choice.
In that first document, the Founding Fathers said:
"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."
Right now, in 2008, George W Bush and his administration are acting as tyrants on a level with King George and RIGHT NOW Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a democrat from Ohio, has brought repeated impeachment resolutions on the House floor against Bush and Vice President Cheney for offenses such as: manipulating intelligence about Iraq; misusing authority with regard to torture, detention and rendition; politicizing the Justice Department, retaliating against critics, as in the outing of former CIA agent Valerie Plame and spying on American citizens without reason through telecommunications corporations.
This kind of behavior is illegal and unconstitutional. They are impeachable offenses and are much, much more serious than anything Bill Clinton ever did in office.
Read for yourself and please email or write your representatives and tell them to support Dennis Kuchinich in his work toward justice for today's tyrants in government.
