Female bullying taken to the extreme

njsteve left a link as a response to my post about the end resolution with the mom's group drama.  It's a video of six girls in Florida screaming at another teenage girl and beating the crap out of her for things she wrote on Myspace.  Steve's link doesn't include audio because it's a clip from the local news.  I found a more comprehensive article at Salon.com.

This kind of thing absolutely horrifies me.  I don't think it's anything new-- teenagers ganging up on people they perceive to have wronged them--but the idea of video taping it and plans to post it on a web site so other people can witness their brutality is a pretty new thing.  Do these girls have no sense that it's *wrong* to physically attack another person simply because you don't like them, or believe they don't like you?  I know kids can be cruel to one another.  I know how mob mentality works in kids and it makes me fear for my kids and their friends.

I don't expect my kids will have lives where they never face adversity and that everyone will like them all the time, but I don't want to fear that they're friends will turn on them like a pack of wild dogs either!

I'm just stunned.

That happened not far from Disney World as far as I know.

No, I don't think people are being taught that this is wrong anymore. Did you hear about the accused murderer in Tennessee grinning at the victims' families and telling them to "bring it on" in the courtroom?

Tennessee? Huh? Are you serious? What the hell is wrong with people?

Oh yes, and having just read the Salon article you linked, I see that the sheriff of the county in which the assault happened is one of the people blaming the Web.

Of course--he doesn't want his jurisdiction to seem like the type of place kids get assaulted. Whereas in previous times this could have happened but there wouldn't have been any video, and these kids would just have gone free. Therefore, no crime rate!

It's scary how far kids are willing to take things now days. It used to be "meet me out back after school and I'll kick your ass". Now it's my entire crew and I are going to beat you within an inch of your life because you irritated us.

After Bum Fights, everything's possible. It'll be like The Running Man.

Every time a new, wretched reality show launches, I wonder how much closer we are to The Running Man.

How many people do you know make jokes about anal rape in prison? Or say they want televised executions?

UGH. I watched a bit of that footage on the news while on the treadmill the other day (so obviously I had no audio either) but I didn't need audio. It actually made me sick watching it. I hate to say I did something SORT OF like that to a girl back in high school but much less violently (a few hits & no video of it, for which I got a very deserved juvenile felony charge or 12) But yeah, it's just SO sick. The worst part is that NO I didn't realize how wrong it was then so I think those girls will look back someday & go oh my god what did we do and why? At least I hope they will. Until then, I hope they get the book thrown at them!!!
