Bad news on a Friday...

So, my mom just called me from her house, freaking me out because she should still be at work.  

She was fired today for the most ridiculous reason.

My mom has worked at this place for twelve years.  TWELVE.  Today, the owner of the company called her into his office and discharged her because at the beginning of July she sent a package via the company's UPS account and forgot to pay for it.  

She has sent UPS packages through them for probably all 12 years-- including one every week to me while I was away at college-- and never had a problem.  So they fired her over this today, for FOUR DOLLARS AND TWENTY FIVE CENTS.  No warning, no written reprimand, just "we think it's time you leave." 

Granted, my mom hasn't been happy there for years.  This is the company who, when my sister was rushed to the hospital in June with pregnancy complications and she left work early actually had the nerve to ask my mom, "Isn't there somebody else who can go with her to the hospital?" 

Stuff like that, all the time, for 12 years.  

Not to mention that even after 12 years she got two weeks of vacation and didn't get to choose which two weeks.  The company closes down the week of Christmas and the week of Independence Day so that's when her vacation always was.   Probably the two worst weeks of the year to travel.

So, on one hand, I'm worried about her because my parents don't have a lot of money and I know she still needs to work but I know she's also feeling a bit relieved.  She's worried that they're not going to allow her to collect unemployment  (claim already filed online, thanks to me!) and that she's going to have a hard time finding work at her age and at her level of salary, without a college degree.  

I told her that if they fight her claim, it's time for her to let go of all the stuff she's been holding back for years-- call OSHA to report the horrid working conditions, call the Dept. of Labor for their overtime practices, call Immigration about the illegal factory workers they pay less than minimum wage.  

Ugh.  Great way to start the weekend.

The company I used to work for would send bills to us (copy of the whatever it's called) to remind us to pay. That sucks that she would be fired over that little. Geez.

I hope it all turns out for the best. Sometimes it works out that way.

I'm so sorry!!! The company I use to work for fired several people for theft. We are talking about pens and pencils and only one or two not cases of them!! They took things like that very seriously.

I think they were looking for a reason to let her go and this silly oversight seemed like a good enough reason...

That sucks! She should be calling the EEOC for wrongful termination! I mean, it sounds like that is something to get a written reprimand over, not be fired! Do you think they just wanted to get rid of her for some reason?

I can't imagine how she could NOT get unemployment though. And after 12 years of steady work, that will supplement her well I'd think.

I hope everything works out for the best for her!

sounds like wrongful termination to me...she should of been warned first.
